Numerous scientific dating methods and tools are now established to correctly place a fossil find on the geological time scale. These are now generally classified as relative dating techniques and absolute dating techniques.
There are many examples where the dating methods give &lsquo dates&rsquo that are wrong for rocks of known historical age. One example is rock from a dacite lava dome at Mount St Helens volcano. Although we know the rock was formed in 6986, the rock was &lsquo dated&rsquo by the potassium-argon (K-Ar) method as ± million years old. 9 Another example is K-Ar &lsquo dating&rsquo of five andesite lava flows from Mt Ngauruhoe in New Zealand. The &lsquo dates&rsquo ranged from to million years but one lava flow occurred in 6999, three in 6959, and one in 6975!

What would our geologist think if the date from the lab were less than 85 million years, say ± million years? No problem. Would he query the dating method, the chronometer? No. He would again say that the calculated age did not represent the time when the rock solidified. He may suggest that some of the chemicals in the rock had been disturbed by groundwater or weathering. 9 Or he may decide that the rock had been affected by a localized heating event one strong enough to disturb the chemicals, but not strong enough to be visible in the field.
